Satellite imagery helps Mike Emens predict yields in August
Most of us are skittish about selling much of our new crop until we have a good sense for how it will yield. Mike Emens of Frankfort, IN, has a leg up on most of us. He subscribes to a satellite photo imagery service that helps project his yields in August within 10% of the final yield.
“I have limited on-farm bin storage,” says Emens. “So forward marketing is important for me. Getting accurate yield figures in August is a real boon for my
marketing.”.......More

JORGE HERAUD is the business unit manager for and director of business development for Trimble Agriculture. For the last three years, he has been involved in shaping Trimble's entry into precision agriculture, which has included acquisitions, new product development and partnerships.
FIN: What has changed about variable-rate application? Is it a reality now?
HERAUD: Yes, I believe it is. Variable rate [VR] has been out for a long time, but in the last two to three years it has become more mainstream. And the reasons are several. One is that the economics are different. Fertilizer and seed are much more expensive than they were three to four years ago. And declining commodity prices are making it even more critical for farmers to save money. So the cost equation is making VR very tangible.......More

REMEMBER WHEN Google Earth rocked the consumer world by providing satellite images of any place in the world from a laptop computer?
Users can glide over and zoom in on any locale to get driving directions, find nearby restaurants, measure distance and go on virtual vacations.
Now Agri ImaGIS Technologies has brought similar capabilities to the agricultural market in an online system called SatShot 3D. It provides farmers with a 3-D look at their crops along with a software platform of mapping tools and crop information to apply seed, fertilizer and other crop inputs at variable rates.......More

Farm Industry News: Variable rate < the big story
From Senior Editor Jodie Wehrspann

Perhaps the biggest overlooked ag story today, with nary a neon sign signaling its significance, is variable-rate technology. I remember first
writing about it 10 years ago. At the time, we examined whether variable-rate technology paid for itself. But with prices for seed and fertilizer
jumping in recent years, growers are scrambling to find ways to cut costs in this commodity-driven market. Variable rate is being seen as the
next big hope......More
